QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Orthopedic FAQs

How long does joint replacement surgery take?

Surgical time depends on the procedure and your condition. Dr. Chen’s usual estimate is about 1 hour for knee replacement and 1.5–2 hours for direct anterior hip replacement. Anesthesia, preparation and recovery in the operating suite take additional time.

How will I start moving after surgery?

Your care team will assess when and how to begin walking, including whether a walking aid is needed. Wound care, gait training and rehabilitation are tailored to your procedure and progress. Follow the team’s instructions rather than a fixed recovery timetable.

What should I bring to the hospital?

Bring your National Health Insurance card, identification, regular medications, comfortable clothing and toiletries. A phone charger, a book or other familiar items may make your stay more comfortable. Your hospital will confirm any additional items you need.

How is the length of my hospital stay decided?

Your care team will assess your procedure, general health, pain control and ability to manage safely after discharge. The length of your stay is individualized and will be discussed with you.
